Judi Dench stars for a second time in a BBC production of The Cherry Orchard, this time as Madame Ranevskaya. Set in Russia in the year 1900, the adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s famous play chronicles a noblewoman’s return to her family estate after a five-year absence. She finds that the family fortune has dwindled to practically nothing, and that she and her brother are faced with the difficult choice of selling the family’s treasured cherry orchard or losing everything.
A comedy play with a sense of foreboding by Anton Chekhov. Sensing that revolution was about to put an end to privileged ways of life he wrote with sympathy for these people.
Starring Judi Dench, Bill Paterson, Anton Lesser.
