Set against a backdrop of power, love, betrayal and war, Versailles examines a defining period of French history. The year is 1667 and King Louis XIV is a 28-year-old monarch on the cusp of greatness. A ruthless leader, he will stop at nothing to achieve his vision of creating the most beautiful palace in Europe and seizing absolute control of France and his enemies. The cast is an international roster with Brit George Blagden (Les Misérables, Vikings) playing the Sun King.

BBC Two has taken UK rights to Anglo-French drama Versailles, a 10-part English-language series.

The costume designer is Madeline Fontaine (the two-part adaptation of Marcel Pagnol’s Jean de Florette / Manon des sources, all of Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s films (except Alien Resurrection), Séraphine, Poulet aux prunes, Camille Redouble, Yves Saint Laurent).
