This revival of the classic British series begins in 1936, six years after parlor maid Rose left 165 Eaton Place, and it is set against the backdrop of a Britain with a new king. Fate brings Rose back to the home — this time as housekeeper for the new owners, Sir Hallam and his wife, Lady Agnes; his mother, Lady Maud, soon arrives with manservant Mr. Singh. Rose tries to recruit a new “downstairs” family to help run the elegance of the “upstairs” world, but she finds that her job isn’t easy, for she discovers that — in both worlds — there is a labyrinth of secrets, lies and scandals. 2 seasons.
“War is looming. The working classes are questioning the great certainty by which they have always lived: that there is a place for everyone, and everyone in his place. The political classes are beginning to divide between those who want to avoid war at all costs and those who believe that even war is justified if it means stopping Hitler. And the glittering social life of the era carries on just the same, in a last glorious gasp.” – New York Times
