Although Marius (Horst Buchholz) loves his beautiful girlfriend, Fanny (Leslie Caron), he nonetheless chooses to leave her for a life of adventure on the high seas. Pregnant with Marius’s child, Fanny finds comfort in the arms of elderly suitor Panisse (Maurice Chevalier). Renowned stage and screen director Joshua Logan helms this romantic drama, which was nominated for five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Charles Boyer. The story takes place in 1920’s Marseille, France and is based on the play which is in turn based on the Marseille trilogy by M Pagnol.
