Romance and scandal unfold against the backdrop of the lavish, sexy and competitive world of London high society in 1813.

The British Bridgerton family is at the center of the 8-episode period series that Netflix calls a “reimagined Regency story.”

In the new period drama from producer Shonda Rhimes, Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor, Dickensian) is the eldest Bridgerton daughter and in need of a husband. The just-returned-to-London Duke of Hastings Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page, Roots) is society’s darling bachelor.

Sounds like a possible match, but there’s a problem: Daphne thinks the Duke is entirely unworthy and unsuitable, and the Duke has no interest in his title, society, or taking a wife.

Lady Whistledown (Julie Andrews), the scandal-making Regency era gossip columnist who narrates the romance, has her own thoughts about who should be with who in the marriage mart for the elite.

Despite Daphne and the Duke proclaiming that they want nothing the other has to offer, their attraction is undeniable and sparks fly as they find themselves engaged in an increasing battle of wits while navigating society’s expectations for their future.

Referencing her first book in the series, Julia Quinn told Entertainment Weekly that “the heart of this season is the story of The Duke and I and how they did it and how they structured it, is just brilliant.”

Quinn said the sets were “magical” and that she was “blown away” by the scripts which are “fabulous” and incorporate some new stories not in the books. She added, “It’s going to be amazing.”

We hope so, because if it is as good as she says, that’s your Christmas break sorted: All 8 episodes of Season 1 of “Bridgerton” premiere on Netflix December 25, 2020.

As to whether there will be more seasons of “Bridgerton,” under a recent arrangement between Shonda Rhimes and Netflix, the streamer is now the exclusive home to Rhimes’ Shondaland. Rhimes will be creating new content for Netflix over the four-year deal. According to Netflix, the “Bridgerton” series follows the eight close-knit siblings of the powerful Bridgerton family as they attempt to find love, and there are 8 books in Quinn’s series.

Additionally, at the end of February 2020, ProductionWeekly listed the “Bridgerton” as being renewed for Season 2, and reported that it was scheduled to start filming in July 2020, but we all know how the pandemic interrupted best laid plans. While there is currently (October 2020) no confirmation that further seasons of “Bridgerton” are going ahead, all that would seem to add up to a whole lot of fingers crossed and sounds like a hopeful yes, especially if Season 1 is well received.
